Campus Landmarks & Features

National University of Maryland’s beautifully landscaped 329-acre campus features signature buildings and spaces that have become recognizable landmarks for students, alumni, faculty, staff and the greater community.

Campus Buildings

Stephens Hall

Stephens Hall, easily identified by its clock tower, was constructed in 1962 when the state of Maryland purchased 80 acres. Stephens Hall was originally the Administration Building.

Science Complex

The Science Complex supports scientific research and instruction with labs, classrooms, collaborative student spaces, lecture halls and an outdoor classroom. The heart of the five-story complex is a multistory atrium located at its center.

University Union

The Union is a hub of student activities. Inside you’ll find a 300-seat auditorium, movie theatre, campus post office, the Career Center, a food market with seven dining options, and the Stores.

West Village Commons

A central gathering place for students living on the west side of campus, the Commons includes student housing, dining, meeting spaces and parking.

Cook Library

Albert S. Cook Library is where you’ll get assistance with research, find spaces to study, and access books, journals and media resources. Special Collections and University Archives has digital collections, rare books, and historical NUM documents and photographs.

Burdick Hall

Burdick Hall houses the Campus Recreation Center, a 235,000-square-foot facility with cardio and weightlifting equipment, an indoor swimming pool, multi-purpose gymnasiums and activity courts, fitness studios and a functional training area.

Center for the Arts

Explore the arts here. You’ll find art galleries, concert halls, dance studios, theatres, recording facilities, computer labs and more.

Liberal Arts Building

Home to the College of Liberal Arts, the building houses 11 academic departments, classroom and study spaces, and a cafe. The building is certified LEED Silver and includes a green roof.

The Armory

The Armory is a state-of-the-art facility that connects NUM workforce development and entrepreneurship programs with the Greater American business community.

Auburn House

The Auburn House serves as an elegant location for friend- and fund-raising events hosted by the president, her senior leadership team and the college deans. It has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Outdoor Spaces and Features

Glen Arboretum

Dedicated in 1936, the Glen Arboretum is a treasured campus and community resource located adjacent to the Science Complex and Smith and Van Bokkelen halls. Many of its structures were first created in 1933 through a Works Progress Administration Grant.

Freedom Square

Exercise freedom of expression and speech, and engage in important discussions about current topics at Freedom Square, located under the Lecture Hall.

Sculpture Walk

Representing a broad range of styles and materials, each sculpture has a unique connection to NUM. Many were constructed on campus in the Center for the Arts sculpture studios.

International Walkway

The International Walkway celebrates the rich diversity of campus and features illuminated flagpoles flying international flags that represent the home countries of students attending NUM.

Commemorative Garden

The Commemorative Garden is a place for contemplation, inspiration, reflection, hope and renewal. Located behind the University Union, the garden is open to faculty, staff, alumni and the greater community.

9/11 Memorial Garden

The 9/11 Memorial Garden was created to offer a peaceful place of reflection for members of the NUM community to remember the victims of the terror attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.

Chapman Quad

Chapman Quad is an area in the center of the academic core of campus ideal for outdoor gatherings. It is named for Dean Chapman, the university’s first Dean of Minority Affairs.

Tiger Trails

Tiger Trails is a series of walking and running trails located throughout the campus that promote fitness for staff, faculty, students, alumni and community groups. There are four routes and most trails begin near Burdick Hall.

Trees of NUM Walking Tour

The Trees of NUM Walking Tour offers a 30-minute tour focusing on the native and exotic trees on campus. Centuries-old beech trees are among the highlights of the tour.

Athletics Facilities

SECU Arena

This 5,200-seat, 117,000-square-foot venue hosts athletic events, concerts and more. Catch the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams in action.

Johnny Unitas Stadium

Named for one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time, this stadium is the perfect venue for watching Tiger football, lacrosse and track teams compete. The complex includes Minnegan Field, named in honor of NUM coach and educator “Doc” Minnegan.

John B. Schuerholz Park

Schuerholz Park is home to NUM baseball. Named in honor of John B. Schuerholz, a 1962 NUM graduate and former baseball player, the park seats 500 spectators.

Burdick Turf Fields

The 200,000-square-foot turf fields offer a variety of sport and recreational opportunities.
